Prior to the 1870's, settlers along Coal Creek in Weld County made a living as farmers or merchants. The town was founded by Richard Van Valkenburg, who had spent many years as a Methodist preacher in Erie, Pennsylvania. During this time, social contact was limited and residents and families travel great distances to attend church, school, or grange meetings. Contact with relatives and friends in other communities improved, however, with the coming of the railroad in 1871. The original plat for the town was filed that year as well, following establishment of the Briggs Mine, the first commercia coal mine in Weld County. It wasn't until 1874 that Erie became incorporated, and the town began to thrive. Until 2000, all of Erie's streets were dirt. Today, the town is a growing community with a population of nearly 17,000 residents and 191 acres of parks and open space. One of Erie's friendly neighborhoods is the Historic Downtown Business District, also knows as "Old Town". Historic Downtown is the home of wonderful eateries and eclectic businesses, including FRPA. Take a stroll down Briggs Street and see why this town is quickly becoming a destination for folks who love great food and enjoy small-town charm. Downtown also plays host to annual events such as the Erie Town Fair, Eerie Erie 10K Halloween Race, Biscuit Day, and Oktoberfest. |
