Mental Health in Politics
Is it just me or have the candidates virtually ignored mental health concerns in the during their campaigns? Yes, they've talked about education, our financial crisis, health care, global warming, and a myriad of international topics. But nothing about mental health. Of course, presidential and local candidates hardly ever talk about mental health, even in the context of health care in general. Nor do they talk about Leukemia research or obesity or those other important things. This is probably a low priority on the docket of concerns for Americans overall, but I think it's an important issue. Ok, maybe I'm a little bit biased, being a psychologist but Coloradans should be especially concerned, as our state is generally in the lowest five states nationally for funding in mental health. The homeless, low income individuals, and immigrants have a very difficult time finding services in Colorado. And it's no easy task either for those who have health insurance and mental health benefits. So what do you think? Should our candidates, especially those running for local offices in Colorado, be talking about these kinds of things, or do you think most of us have bigger worries on our mind?
