Working on Finding a Job?
photo

There is no doubt that being without work is one of the most stressful situations in life.  This is especially the case when people are getting laid off in droves and the competition for positions is high in this dreadful economy.  Aside from the stress on your monthly budget, the stress can come from feeling worthless and inadequate when offers and interviews fail to surface.  And if that wasn't enough, often times our identities and self-worth are very much tied to our career or our position at work, and when we don't have a job, it can cause embarrassment or a vague feeling of emptiness.  So what to do?  Here are some tips to mange your anxiety and stress while you are searching...

Give yourself time to mourn the loss of your job.  It's ok to feel grief and sadness about being let go, especially when you have put lots of time or energy into your work.

Embrace change.   Change, especially when it is unexpected, can be difficult to tolerate for many people.  Many times, however, transition in life can bring many positive opportunities and new friendships.

Maintain a positive attitude.  Approach each job opportunity with an open mind.  Remind yourself that this is a temporary situation.

Reserve time for life, outside of your job search.  Looking for a new job is demanding.  But it's important to relax.  Take time out to manage stress through exercise, hobbies, engaging your support network, deep breathing, yoga, meditation, journaling, or progressive muscle relaxation.

Honor your value.  It's hard not to take rejection personally.  But remember what a valuable employee you are and be prepared to sell your skills.  If you start to feel incapable, this will likely show in any interview you have, and potential employers will not be confident that you are capable either.

Get help.  Tell your friends and family that you are looking for a job so that they can alert you to opportunities and help you network with key individuals.  Have someone you trust review your resume or practice an interview role play with you.  Check in with your loved ones when you're feeling discouraged.   And don't forget about professional help.  Career counselors, and unemployment agents can be of huge assistance when you're feeling stuck, or when you're not sure what kind of job your'e hoping to get.

Thanks for addressing this topic. It is nice to know that some of the feelings I have about this souring job market are okay. Management has been laying off people in every department of the company I work for (and even closing several locations!). People are nervous, rumors are flying, and it is difficult not to get swept away in the negativity.

I am trying to maintain a reasonably positive attitude about all this. I will also try to use some of your suggestions to help me through this tough time in our nation's history.

Absolutely great article. Believe it or not the stress of layoffs affects those that are without work and those that remain at the company.

At my work we are currently going through what upper management deems as rightsizing for the production volumes that are needed. The guys on the production floor that are left need as much counseling in many respects as those that are getting counseling because they were rightsized.

Professional therapeutic help is needed on all fronts in the current business climate.
